In the lead up to when Andy Irons won his first world title in 2002, I did not entirely dig his vibe. He came across (to me) as brash and arrogant (and maybe that was just how he rolled, how he got his power to surf the way he did). I loved how he surfed but wished he was a little more humble. Well I got my wish. Andy over the next few years appeared to became a much more laid back, super nice guy. In interviews he just seemed more at peace with himself. The passion and strength that comes across in this short clip produced by Billabong, I reckon gives a pretty amazing look into Andy's mind and heart.

Sport (any sport) and good music make for awesome clips. Throw in a good story and you are looking at an epic. I tweeted earlier this week for Al Humphreys a pretty amazing example of this. Al is working hard to perfect his own versions of epic footage and I can't wait to see what he comes up with. In the meantime, for inspiration it is hard to beat what Jordan Manley has done just recently. Below is Episode 2 in a 3 part series of ski footage. All I can say is...whoah! This is definitely stoke!

It's baaaack! Double theme today. Two activities which, although just pretty average in both, I am very passionate about - surfing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Yannick Beven lives close to me here in France, just down the road in Guethary. His house and gym are near Quicksilver Europe's new rather awesome HQ. Yannick was formerly a pro surfer (his brother Patrick competes on the world tour still) but now spends his days generally living life to it's full. Which, for him means surfing and BJJ. Yannick is the conditioning trainer for a number of surfers and Quicksilver pros including Jeremy Flores, Miky Picon and the one and only Kelly Slater.

Hard sessions grappling followed (and preceded by) a gnarly session in the water. He gets paid to do this? That is what I call living the dream! The vid below gives a good idea of what that dream is all about.

Not so much surf around this weekend but the rivers are running well so I am on the water in any case. I head to the UK next week for a few talks. Guessing that summer is over there? Enjoy your weekend folks.

While my chosen vocation as a professional adventurer is not going to solve the world's problems, if nothing else it certainly catches folk's attention (at least for a couple of minutes). The how of becoming a full-time adventurer is often asked but equally so, why? Why the sometimes pain and hardship? (on expedition and off) Why the uncertainty of life? (on expedition and off). I really struggle to provide an all encompassing answer that people want to hear. My standard and entirely truthful response of a desperate desire to avoid a "real job" and a "normal life" is either not believed or does not resonate well with most. So I thought I might be able to come up with a list of the top ten reasons I do what I do. What do you reckon?

1. I honestly just bloody love it!

2. I grew up flicking through endless copies of my old man's National Geographic magazines. He had a great desire to understand the world in which he lived and I reckon it rubbed off quite nicely on me. Getting out there on expedition puts me right into those same pages of National Geographic. Stuff comes alive.

3. I am a gear nut. I love being able to try out new bits of kit under pretty extreme conditions. Figuring out different combos, what goes best with what etc. That said, I still make an effort to keep gadgetry on expedition to a minimum.

4. My first real taste of adventure was the pretty standard rite of passage for many young Aussies - live and work in Europe. Now I know endless partying across the continent does not equal the sort of adventure I now undertake, but it was certainly enough to open my eyes to the diversity of people and places on this planet. The adventures and expeditions I now complete grew and grew from this one little taste.

5. Uncertainty. As mentioned in the opener, the life of a professional adventurer or expeditioneer is rife with uncertainty both on and off expedition. Unlike some vocations, jacking around when I am supposed to be working won't get me a pay check at the end of the month. Will I be able to sell an article this week? Can I book more speaking engagements? Will sponsors come on board in time? My working life is spent poking that many irons in the fire that at times I start to burn myself. It sure makes life interesting, which I reckon is not a bad result.

6. Being outside, whether in the mountains or on a river makes me feel free. The air is pure and fresh, the water clear and flowing and possibilities seem endless. Time moves more slowly and I have time to think. Some of my best ideas come while just walking and having an open mind, devoid of thoughts about the tube, taxes, politics, shopping, tv. My body adapts itself to the environment in which I place it. Scrambling over rocks and down gullies, all of a sudden I am lighter, more agile. Paddling on a river, my muscles feel the force of the water's flow and become one.

7. I like to undertake difficult journeys which most others would never consider for fear of failure, injury or death. To do things that others find inconceivable or consider the want to do them motivated only by some sort of mental condition makes me stoked. I am not interested in records or firsts (for the moment at least) but I do like to do things that push the boundaries of human limits.

8. I used to work as a sea-kayaking guide, river guide and commercial expedition leader (an endeavour in which I occasionally still dabble). Getting paid to be on a river or a mountain is just amazing and at times hard to believe. A lot of trips I used to do were really just trips with mates (other guides) with a few new friends (clients) who happened to be along for the ride. As a professional adventurer I still get to do these sort of things, get paid more than a guide and go to slightly more extreme places than where you would take paying clients (oh and I don't have to look after anyone or answer dumb questions!). Sweet!

9. It makes me smarter. Instead of dismissing other people's way of life or actions, by spending time in different regions I come away with a much greater understanding of why certain events unfold. Sky News, BBC, CNN are all great if you want a narrow slightly out of focus view on the world but it is hard to beat being on the ground and seeing things for yourself.

10. I suppose all these other points lead me back to my usual answer - a desperate desire to avoid a "real job" and a "normal life". Far from being an escape from hard work, it is the endless list of jobs and things to do that I relish. Starting work at 6 in the morning and going non-stop till midnight and still being behind the eight ball makes for some long days. But then being able to take the morning off and go for a surf at Hossegor and call it "training". That is for sure not normal and can hardly be called work can it?

I have a long way to go in my chosen vocation but I am getting there and digging the journey like you would not believe!

When we finished our full human-powered source to sea descent of the Amazon River I was elated to have achieved such a hard fought goal. I also kind of figured it might take me a while to get back on a big river again. Well it has been a good many months now and walking across Iran in it's entirety earlier this year might have been the trigger, (or is it final straw?) but I reckon it might be that time again...

The next hardest thing after having decided to complete a human-powered descent of the longest river on each continent is coming up with a suitable ordering. With the Amazon done I am left with 6 pretty special rivers to complete. How do you choose the next? I have spent a good number of weeks now researching furiously and scribbling notes in my journal in some sort of mad equation hoping to come up with a result. I considered so many factors and by some luck I have managed to make sense of my quasi-mathematics to find a winner.

In 2011, I will make a full human-powered source to sea descent of the Mississippi River in North America (or more accurately the Red Rock - Jefferson - Missouri - Mississippi). At a touch under 6300km this river system is the 4th longest in the world behind just the Nile, Amazon and Yangtze rivers. A whole lot of paddling! I am amped to soon be on such a magnificent river. No hippos, crocs or gun-toting rebels on this descent but a waterway as mighty as the Mississippi is taken lightly at one's own peril. Complacency leads to mistakes which leads to failure. Not an option for me I am afraid!

I have a pretty accurate put-in date which I will reveal soon, as well as announcing in the coming weeks some pretty cool sponsorship news. I plan to make the descent largely alone (ie. no team), but I would be stoked if anyone were to join me for a wee paddle if they so desired.

A little different stoke today and very much at odds with my current whereabouts. I am spending a couple of weeks in South West France where it is furnace hot. The reason? For a bit of a break and ostensibly to get a load of writing done. Verdict on both is average! But getting there all the same.

I received an email last week from someone in Iran who had come across my website. They wished to share with me a photograph of their country which I have included below for you guys.

It is a scene that brings back some great memories for me personally but is also very much at odds with the view many people have of the country. Yes, there are a couple of large deserts kicking about there but the Alborz and Zagros Mountains in winter are stunning. As far as the eye can see in open valleys there is nothing but snow. An awesome sight!

One of the very reasons that next year I am organising and leading a trekking and climbing excursion in Iran. I am stoked to be heading back and cannot wait. The 2 week journey will divide it's time between the Zagros in the south and Central Alborz in the north, taking on a bunch of amazing peaks. With my friend Mohammad from IRAN MountainZone in charge of logistics in country it is sure to be unforgettable. More information coming out soon!

Enjoy your weekend folks!

Sterling Hayden was (reportedly) an actor, author, sailor, model, Marine and OSS (secret!) agent. He ran away to sea when he was 15 in 1931 and worked on yachts throughout the US, Cuba and skippered a schooner to Tahiti when he was just 22. He later became a model and leading man in Hollywood, touted by Paramount Pictures as "The Beautiful Blond Viking God". Bloody heck! After only two films he enlisted in the Marines and then became an OSS undercover agent running guns to Yugoslav partisans behind German lines in WWII, where he was awarded for his bravery.

I came across Sterling a while back via a quote of his which inspired a person whom I admire, kayaker, Steve Fisher (pictured above). When Steve was on one of his first full-on kayaking expeditions, he and his team mates were sat around a fire when one of them quoted Sterling Hayden. At this moment sat beside a river in Nepal, Steve knew what he was going to do for the rest of his life. Steve recalled from what I can tell a slightly modified version which I have reproduced below. What do you think?

"To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest...where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of pocket or bankruptcy of soul? "

I choose neither! I am pretty solid on the soul, now to work a bit more on the pocket part!

I am stoked, thanks to the awesome guys at Zeal Optics and as part of the Expedition School, to give away a bunch of very cool gear!

Zeal Optics have been an amazing sponsor over the last 3 years and super supportive of anything I do. Zeal Optics are just like me. Stoked to be doing what they do and with a real passion and "zeal" for the outdoors. Without doubt they make some of the best eyewear available on the planet!. Anyway, great company, awesome kit. End of story. Now watch the clip below.

NB. I swear I did not read that spiel off a prompter. It took about 100 takes just to bumble those few words out and that was the best of a bad bunch!

Right, how to win! I have a bunch of hats, (as you saw in the clip) and a pair of Zeal Optics Tenacity sunglasses with ZB-13 polarized lenses to give-away. All you need to do to be in the running is the below. Simple.

1. Answer this question: How many grey Zeal Optics hats are shown in the clip?

2. Email me (mark@markkalch.com) with your answer and Twitter name*

3. Follow me (MarkKalch) and Zeal Optics (ZealOptics) on Twitter and tweet the following - "I just entered to win sunglasses from @ZealOptics thanks to @MarkKalch. Stoked! You can too! http://bit.ly/brT99Q" (no need for the parentheses)

*If you are honestly not a Twit like so many of us, just email me the answer (and tell your friends about it!). If you are on Twitter, be nice and follow Zeal Optics and myself. Good Karma!

Easy enough? I will be drawing the winner at random on the weekend of the Expedition School (August 20-22).

First prize is 1 pair of Zeal Optics Tenacity sunglasses with ZB-13 polarized lenses plus a sweet Zeal Optics cap and stickers. I also have a couple of runner-up prizes of caps and stickers to give-away.

As always, hectic times here in the mountains. Some my own doing by being a mite dis-organised or just plain faffing about. On top of that I have busted my neck training which is a real drag. Having finally recovered from shoulder recon and being able to train hard again, I go get an ego and don't tap out when I should! Stupid! I am now walking around like Frankenstein, loaded up on Ibuprofen and an ice pack tied to my neck with a pair of thermal long johns, trying to keep good posture. I kid you not! What a sight!

My good friends at Zeal Optics have sent through some fantastic prizes for me to giveaway. I have a bunch of awesome hats and some very cool sunglasses to give out to some lucky folks. Everyone attending the Expedition School will score some very nice kit just for turning up, as well as having the chance to win a pair of sunglasses. But, if you can't come along then you still have the chance to win sunglasses and hats. I promise a post on Monday will reveal all and how you can win! TIP: I am not so famous or loved, so you probably have a very good chance of winning with a little effort!

Right, today's stoke is wing-suit flying. Done before, but this one is a little different. Red Bull sent some of their Air Force guys to Seattle in the US, to do a fly by of the iconic Space Needle. Results below! Cool as!

Have an ace weekend! Competition details next week I promise!
